Commentary: The wind beneath your wings

Here’s a little background behind why I like the song, “The Wind Beneath My Wings”, sung by Roger Wittaker, so much. It was written by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley in 1982.

The lyric of “The Wind” reminds me of how much my wife of 62 years next month, Joanne, has been such a love and help to me. If you listen to the words, you’ll understand sense that the song may apply to you and those who love you as well.

This thought of mine about Joanne’s love reinforces what I learned later. In a 2002 UK poll, “Wind Beneath My Wings” was found to be the most-played song at British funerals.” Well, one doesn’t have to wait that long to express one’s love.

Lots of folks recorded the song: Lou Rawls, Gladys Knight (with you know whom); Bette Midler for the soundtrack of the film, “Beaches”, as well as making it No. 1 on Billboard in 1989. Perry Como wanted it released as a single, but RCA refused. Como was reportedly so angry (something I can’t imagine), that he vowed to never record for RCA Records again.

Have a listen to Roger Wittaker and “The Wind Beneath My Wings” and see if it affects you the same way as it did me.

Here is the lyric of “The Wind…”

It must have been cold there in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You were content to let me shine, that’s your way
You always walked a step behind
So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name, for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain

Did you ever know that you’re my hero
And everything I would like to be
If I can fly higher than an eagle
You are the wind beneath my wings
It might have appeared to go unnoticed
But I’ve got it all here in my heart
I want you to know I know the truth
Of course I know it
I would be nothing without you

Fly, fly, fly away
You let me fly so high
Oh, fly, fly
So high against the sky
So high I almost touch the sky
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you
The wind beneath my wings

Happy Mother’s Day, Jo.
